Overview

The Umbwe Route is a thrilling and less-traveled trail that offers a steep and direct ascent up Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its challenging initial incline, this route is best suited for adventurous trekkers looking for a quiet and scenic climb. Starting on the southern side of the mountain, Umbwe offers stunning views and minimal foot traffic during the first two days, providing a unique sense of solitude. On day three, the route merges with the Lemosho and Machame trails, leading towards Barranco Wall and the summit at Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341 ft).

While Umbwe is often perceived as difficult, its shorter distance and steep elevation gains make it an efficient route for those with trekking experience. The 7-day itinerary is recommended for better acclimatization, ensuring a higher summit success rate. Trekkers on this route will experience all of Kilimanjaro’s climatic zones, from lush rainforests to the glacial summit, witnessing some of the most dramatic landscapes on the mountain.

With expert Wilderness First Responder-certified guides, daily medical checks, and an exceptional support team, our expeditions prioritize safety and comfort. Whether you seek adventure, solitude, or breathtaking scenery, the Umbwe Route is an extraordinary choice for conquering Africa’s highest peak.

Day 2: Trekking from Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

After an early breakfast, your guide and support team will meet you for a final briefing. A short drive will take you to Umbwe Gate (1,800 m / 5,904 ft), where park registration is completed before the trek begins. The first part of the trail leads through a dense rainforest, with a steady and steep ascent towards Umbwe Camp (2,850 m / 9,348 ft).

As this section is humid and experiences frequent rainfall, a raincoat is highly recommended. Upon arrival at the camp, the crew will have your tent set up, and dinner will be ready.

Day 3: Trekking from Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

After breakfast, the trek continues with a gradual ascent through the forest before transitioning to moorland terrain. If the weather is clear, expect breathtaking views of Mount Meru and the Tanzanian lowlands.

The trail leads towards Barranco Camp (3,900 m / 12,792 ft), a stunning location nestled beneath the Great Barranco Wall. Lunch will be provided, and the rest of the day is dedicated to acclimatization and relaxation.

Day 4: Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day starts with an ascent up the Barranco Wall, which looks intimidating but is actually a non-technical climb. The climb takes about an hour, and at the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Kibo Peak.

The trail then continues with multiple ascents and descents towards Karanga Camp (3,995 m / 13,106 ft). After lunch and some rest, an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp follows to help with altitude adjustment.

Day 5: Trekking from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

After breakfast, the trek continues towards Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,327 ft), the final stop before the summit push. The terrain is alpine desert, and the hike is steady but demanding due to the elevation gain.

Once at Barafu Camp, your guide will brief you on the summit attempt, and you will have time to rest and prepare for the challenging night ahead. An acclimatization hike to Kosovo Camp (4,870 m / 15,974 ft) is recommended.

Day 6: Ascent to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

The summit attempt begins around midnight. With headlamps lighting the way, you will ascend towards Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,336 ft), the highest point in Africa. This stretch is physically demanding due to the altitude, but our expert guides will assist you every step of the way.

After reaching the summit and celebrating the achievement, you will descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing further down to Millennium Camp (3,950 m / 12,956 ft).

Day 7: Descent from Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

After breakfast, the final descent leads through lush rainforest towards Mweka Gate (1,640 m / 5,379 ft). Upon arrival, you will receive your summit certificates and have the opportunity to celebrate with your team before heading back to the hotel for a well-earned rest.
